Zalik Academy is not built around a one-size-fits-all model. It was founded by two families whose friendship spans more than fifty years, and whose parents served as community youth mentors in their early twenties. We understand that each learner and household has different needs because that understanding was handed to us.
We communicate closely with parents and caregivers, celebrate students' progress, and work collaboratively to create plans that are realistic, supportive and meaningful. Families are not simply clients — they are valued partners in each learner's journey.
Whether a child is strengthening multiplication skills, earning a high-school credit, stepping onto a professional field, joining a basketball team or helping a family in need, every Zalik experience is designed to build both competence and character.

Two families, more than fifty years of friendship, and a belief passed down a generation: that education should recognize the whole learner and open doors far beyond the classroom.

Educator Ezza Malik-Zahoor and entrepreneur and basketball coach Muhammad Malik combined their passions for teaching, business, athletics and community service to build an organization that supports children, youth, adults and families in meaningful and practical ways.
The name Zalik was first created by combining the family names Zahoor and Malik. It was used as Ezza and Muhammad's wedding hashtag in 2018 and later became the name of the legacy they were building together.
The name also carries a second meaning. In Arabic, the word translates as "That" — a term of distinction and recognition. Today, Zalik honours the couple's parents and grandparents while carrying their values of education, service, hard work and community into the next generation.
The Zahoor and Malik families have been close friends for more than fifty years. Long before Zalik existed, both sets of parents were serving as community youth mentors in their early twenties — work they took on without title, budget or recognition, simply because they believed young people deserved someone in their corner.
Zalik brought those two families formally together. A generation later, the organization carries the same work forward: the children of those mentors, now mentoring. What our parents began in their twenties, we are continuing in ours.

What began through tutoring and personal referrals has grown into a wider learning community offering microschool programming, tutoring, high-school pathways, athletics, camps, leadership experiences, charitable initiatives and community events.
Zalik continues to grow with the same purpose it began with: to see each learner, support each family and use education to create lasting change.

Co-Founder and President · Educator · Entrepreneur · Community Leader
Ezza Malik-Zahoor is an educator, entrepreneur, children's picture-book author and community leader whose work is grounded in service. Born and raised in Scarborough, she began volunteering alongside her father at a young age, learning early that community work is something you do rather than something you talk about. Her service journey has included community centres, hospitals and civic initiatives.
Ezza earned a Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University and a Master of Teaching, placing first in a thesis competition. Her educational experience includes work with schools, childcare and learning organizations, as well as teaching learners locally and internationally, including in Pakistan, London, Nigeria, Vietnam, China and Jamaica.
Through Zalik Academy, Ezza brings together her experience as an educator and her belief that every learner deserves individualized support, meaningful opportunities and a community that believes in them. Her work has been recognized through entrepreneurship and education awards and nominations, and in August 2026 she and Muhammad were invited speakers at the Global Business Symposium’s Youth Leadership Certification Canada 2026 in Toronto.

Muhammad Malik is an entrepreneur, basketball coach and co-founder of Zalik Academy. A graduate of Global Business Management and the owner of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Ajax North, he brings extensive business experience, operational leadership and an entrepreneurial mindset to the organization.
As Ezza's husband and earliest supporter, Muhammad encouraged her to expand her passion for teaching beyond the traditional classroom. His love of basketball and youth development helped build Zalik Warriors, bringing education and athletics together through clinics, tournaments, mentorship and community events.

Monday to Thursday mornings, Kindergarten to Grade 8, taught by level rather than by grade in Scarborough and Oshawa.
Start an application See a pod dayA microschool is a small, mixed-age learning group led by a qualified educator. Ours run Monday to Thursday mornings and are capped at six students per educator.
It is not a classroom with fewer chairs. The small size changes the method: instruction is grouped by level rather than by grade, a child who is ahead in reading and behind in math gets both addressed, and an educator can notice confusion on a face before it becomes a failed unit.
Our pods carry students through Grade 8. From there, families continue with our partner Aubrey Academy, an inspected private school delivering asynchronous online courses toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, so the pathway continues without a break.
Many of our families also homeschool alongside their pod days, and we are glad to work with whatever registration and reporting arrangements suit them.
Friday programming may be offered on demand when sufficient students enrol. After-school care runs to 6:00 p.m. and is billed hourly. Late pick-up is charged at $1 per minute after a fifteen-minute grace period — not to punish anyone, but because an educator is standing there waiting.

Ontario curriculum taught in small groups by level, then put to work in entrepreneurship, public speaking and STEAM.
See the programs Inside the microschoolMonday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Structured enough to make real progress, loose enough that a good tangent is allowed to happen.
Students settle, the day is laid out, and each child gets a moment with an educator before any work starts. We find out who slept badly and who is ready to go.
Reading, writing and language aligned to the Ontario curriculum. Taught in small groups by level rather than by age, so nobody is bored and nobody is drowning.
Math across all five Ontario strands. Diagnostics tell us where each child actually is, not where the grade level says they should be, and instruction starts there.
Entrepreneurship, public speaking and STEAM. Market days, pitches, builds. This is where the academics get used for something the students care about.
The day is summarised for parents, not just logged. Families who stay for after-school care roll straight into homework support until 6:00 p.m.
We diagnose at intake, then reassess through the year, so progress is visible to you in something more useful than a letter grade. Parents get a learning summary that says what the child can now do that they could not do before.
Our materials are built in-house and aligned to the Ontario 2020–2023 curriculum documents: diagnostics, review packages, unit assessments and answer keys across the elementary grades.
Core pod instruction runs Monday to Thursday. Friday programming may be offered on demand when sufficient students enrol, which keeps the day free for appointments, co-op programs and field trips when it is not needed.
Tutoring and camps run on Fridays regardless. Four of the six board PA days this year fall on a Friday, so PA day camps slot in without disrupting a pod week.
Optional participation, respite and individual inclusion support can be scheduled into the parts of the day where a learner benefits most, rather than pulling them out of everything.
An extra pair of hands during the parts of the day a child finds hardest, so they stay in the room with their group.

Some students need a different pace. Some are balancing work, health or family. Some simply learn better outside a building of a thousand people. The pathway is built around the learner rather than the timetable.
Aubrey Academy is a ministry-inspected private high school. Aubrey Academy enrols students, delivers and assesses the courses, and grants the credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Zalik Academy provides in-person academic support alongside those courses — a place to work, an educator to ask, and structure through the week. Zalik does not grant high-school credits.
Students working toward the OSSD with flexible course delivery through Aubrey Academy, supported in person at Zalik. Useful for learners who need to recover credits, get ahead, or study in a smaller setting.
Flexible educational support for adults completing courses, strengthening foundational skills, pursuing new goals or returning to learning. Education never stops, and neither should opportunity.

Join Zalik Warriors View upcoming eventsZalik Warriors is the athletic arm of Zalik Academy. Led by coaches and educators, the program uses sport to develop fundamentals, teamwork, discipline, leadership, resilience and belonging.
Our clinics, tournaments and community experiences welcome learners at different stages of athletic development while maintaining a strong focus on encouragement, sportsmanship and personal growth.
Zalik Warriors also connects athletics with community impact. Events bring together families, local businesses, charities, volunteers and athletes, giving young people the chance to compete, connect and contribute.
Recent workshop
The NBA veteran ran a skills workshop with our players — ball handling, shooting mechanics, footwork, and what it actually takes to repeat something until it becomes automatic.
Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was the third overall pick in the 1990 NBA draft, played nine seasons with the Denver Nuggets, Sacramento Kings and Vancouver Grizzlies, and won Most Improved Player in 1993. He finished his NBA career shooting 90.5 percent from the free-throw line — and in 1993–94 he made 219 of 229 attempts, one of the most accurate seasons in league history.
He went on to play professionally around the world, from Turkey to Greece to Japan. Our players got a morning of that experience up close: not a highlight reel, but the unglamorous repetition that produced it.
That is the point of bringing guests onto our floor. A child can be told a thousand times that discipline compounds. Watching someone who built a career on it, standing three feet away, lands differently.

Guest professional
A Canadian professional guard who grew up ten minutes from our court — and came back to stand on it with our players.
Devoe Joseph was born in Toronto and played his high-school basketball at Pickering High School in Ajax, where he and his younger brother Cory led the team to back-to-back Ontario provincial championships in 2007 and 2008.
He went on to play NCAA basketball at Minnesota and then Oregon, earning First-team All-Pac-12 honours in 2012. His professional career since has taken him through Spain, Turkey, France, Montenegro, Finland, Poland, Romania, Kosovo and more — and most recently home again, to the Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League. He has also represented Canada internationally.
He joined us as special guest at Ballerz for Access, Vol. 1. For our players, the point is not the résumé. It is that a kid from Ajax who played on courts like theirs went on to play professionally on four continents — and still turns up to a charity tournament in Pickering.

Our community work brings families, educators, athletes, businesses, charities and local leaders together. Each initiative is designed to widen access, create belonging and give young people experiences they will remember.

Four of the six PA days — November 20, January 15, February 12 and June 4 — land on a Friday, which sits outside core Monday-to-Thursday pod instruction. Those days cost you nothing in pod capacity. October 26 is the exception: it falls on a Monday, so the camp runs alongside the regular pod and will need a second educator to hold the 1:6 ratio across both groups. September 2 and 3 were also PA days but fell before the first day of school, so no camp ran.

Our seventh anniversary was a charity basketball tournament run with the Embers for Access Foundation. Four teams, a full house, and a night built around the families and partners who carried this academy from a single tutoring room to two locations.
Special guest Devoe Joseph joined us on the floor. Proceeds support Embers for Access subsidy pathways so more families can reach programs like ours.

Four organizations sit under MAEZ — clinical services, elementary learning, an online high school and a charity that removes the cost barrier — aligned so a child's developmental, educational and emotional needs are met together rather than in silos.

An Ontario Ministry-inspected private high school (BSID #665140) offering asynchronous Ontario Secondary School Diploma credit courses for Grades 9 to 12. Students enrol part-time or full-time and may begin at any point in the year, working with an Ontario Certified Teacher throughout each course.
Aubrey specializes in credit upgrades, fast-track and extended pacing, equivalency credits and Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition, and supports homeschoolers who need official Ontario credits on a transcript. Aubrey enrols, teaches, assesses and grants the credits; Zalik provides in-person academic support alongside.

A registered Canadian charity subsidizing autism therapy, respite, inclusive programming and camps for families waiting on Ontario Autism Program funding across Durham Region, Toronto and Waterloo Region. In Ontario, some children wait five to seven years for autism funding simply by virtue of the year they were born.
Embers co-hosts our Ballerz for Access basketball events and operates subsidy pathways that eligible Zalik families may access.

We know that families need more than a program description — they need honest communication, flexibility, consistency and educators who genuinely understand their child.
Our approach begins with listening. We learn about each student's academic level, strengths, interests, confidence, learning habits and goals. From there, we work with the family to build an appropriate plan, monitor progress and adjust support when needed. We celebrate growth while remaining honest about the areas that require continued practice.
Because learning is connected to the whole child, families may combine microschool programming, tutoring, athletics, STEAM, camps and community experiences. This creates continuity and allows students to build lasting relationships with the adults and peers supporting them.

Kindergarten through Grade 12 and beyond. Our microschool and learning pod serves Kindergarten to Grade 8. High-school pathways for Grades 9 to 12 run in collaboration with Aubrey Academy, and adult learners are supported for Grade 12 and beyond.
Zalik Academy is a family-founded education and community organization. We deliver microschool and learning pod programming, homeschooling support, tutoring, athletics, camps and enrichment, alongside in-person academic support for high-school and adult learners.
Yes. Small-group and individualized instruction is aligned with Ontario curriculum expectations across Mathematics, Language, Science and Social Studies, supported by diagnostics and skill-building.
Pods run Monday to Thursday, approximately 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in small groups of six students to one educator. Friday programming may be offered on demand when sufficient students enrol. Families book one to four days a week and are billed monthly.
Aubrey Academy, a ministry-inspected high school, enrols students, delivers and assesses courses and grants the credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Zalik Academy provides in-person academic support alongside and does not grant credits.
Yes. Tutoring runs Monday to Friday 4:00–8:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., in person or virtual, and can be combined with pod days.
Often, yes. Participation and respite support is $25 per hour and individual inclusion support is $30 per hour, scheduled into the parts of the day where a learner benefits most. Tell us at intake so it can be planned properly. Support services are invoiced separately from tuition.

Two-hour minimum on hourly bookings, so the room stays easy to schedule around. All rates are gross and all-inclusive — HST, utilities and amenities are already in the price. Full-month exclusivity holds the entire space, with no one booking around you. Classroom, session and co-working use all share the same rate card.
Beyond straightforward room rental, aligned organizations can partner in more integrated ways. There are four arrangements. The first three take place in our space; the fourth reverses the direction, with us bringing a program to a partner’s facility. The right fit depends on whose clients fill the room, whose space it is, and how much of the delivery is shared.
Our own program groups run a maximum of six to eight children. The space holds up to ten comfortably, so a blended hybrid roster can run a little larger than our own groups alone. Enrolment and final numbers are confirmed at least three weeks before each program starts.
The aligned organization facilitates one of our programs for our client base. Our clients, six to eight children, enrolled and funded through us. The partner delivers the sessions; we handle all enrolment and administrative work so the program stays compliant with any regulatory body our clients seek funding from. No rental charge to the partner. We pay up to $150 per session (maximum two hours), held at $1,800 per 12-week program.
The room holds a blended group, roughly half our participants and half the partner’s own clients, filling the space toward its capacity of ten. Each organization registers and bills its own participants and keeps that revenue. The partner pays no rental fee and co-delivers alongside our staff, who are on hand for support. No facilitation fee by default — the free space and shared staffing are the exchange.
The partner runs their own program for their own clients and rents the space at the rate card. No facilitation fee changes hands, and the partner keeps their own enrolment, revenue and administration. A weekly program at the recurring rate works out at $72 per two-hour session, or $864 across twelve weeks.
The mirror of rental only. We bring one of our programs to an aligned organization’s facility and rent their room, reaching families in a community where a partner already has suitable space without us holding a lease there. Our clients, our staff, our enrolment and compliance. We pay a negotiated facility rate set to fit their room and our program.

All collaboration terms are open to negotiation and confirmed per partner in a short written agreement before a cycle begins.
